Windows Processes Explained

Like most modern operating systems, Windows can run many programs at the same time. Still, unless your computer has several processors, it can only perform one task at a time. To solve this problem Windows switches rapidly between all running programs, creating the illusion of all programs running in parallel. If you have ever experienced a crash, however, you probably know that as soon as the switching stops working, all programs simply stop working. This is because the processor gets locked up in one process and stays there.

What is a Process?

While the word “program” refers to the executable code (the exe file, for example), a process is a program that is being executed. When you start a program in Windows, the executable will be loaded into RAM. Windows will then add the new process to its internal process list and make sure the process receives some CPU time as well as memory and other resources. A process can then request any amount of resources from Windows as long as there are resources left. Windows keeps track of which processes are using which resources. As soon as a process is closed or terminated, all resources used by that process will be returned to Windows and will then be handed out to other processes. Unlike memory and similar resources, CPU time cannot simply be requested but is instead shared equally between processes. A process can also return the CPU to Windows before the assigned time slice ends. This is actually what happens most of the time and is the reason why your CPU usage is not always at 100 %.

Terminating Processes to Free Up Resources

Whenever a process is terminated by the user, all resources used by that process will be released and become available to other processes. If you are running ten processes on your system, each process might get only 10% of the total hardware resources. If you have a 1 GHz processor and 64 MB RAM, for example, each process might get CPU and memory resources corresponding to a 100 MHz CPU and 6.4 MB of RAM. This example is, of course, greatly simplified, and in reality some processes use many more resources than others. Still, because many users are running 50 processes or more, the amount of resources available to a game or an mp3 player can be considerably smaller than the total hardware resources. What can we do about this problem? As it turns out, there is actually a rather simple solution. Terminate!

Using the Windows Task Manager

If you are lucky enough to be running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, terminating processes can be done with the built-in Task Manager. Although you can only terminate one process at a time and have to guess which processes are important and which ones are just wasting resources, the Windows 2000 Task Manager allows you to terminate almost all processes including the invisible ones running in the background. If you are running Windows 98 or Me, however, the CTRL + ALT + DEL screen will only list visible processes; and terminating then often takes minutes. What you really need for this strategy to be efficient is a new Task Manager.

Even if you know exactly which programs are installed on your computer, you can’t be sure it hasn’t got any malware. When your PC is infected, it might start acting weird, slow down, display pop-ups, etc. Or it might not. Malware will just run different processes in the background and you will never have a clue until something terrible happens. Like all your passwords, bank details and other personal information getting stolen.

Replacing The Windows Task Manager

WinTasks from LIUtilities is an easy-to-use task manager that replaces the built-in Task Managers in both Windows 98 and Windows 2000 or XP. Instead of listing processes with the names iexplore.exe, msimn.exe or explorer.exe, WinTasks shows processes with their real names like Internet Explorer, Outlook Express or Program Manager. Not only will this help you decide which processes can be terminated safely, but it will also help you identify unwanted background processes quickly and easily. WinTasks also includes detailed descriptions of all common Windows processes, making it easier than ever before to clean up your system and optimize the use of valuable hardware resources. Apart from user-friendly names and descriptions, WinTasks shows you in real time how your resources are being used and can help you find and eliminate resources problems within seconds. The built-in process statistics and process scripting language can also be used to automatically optimize your system for maximum performance. How about a script that automatically terminates unnecessary processes and frees up resources whenever a demanding application is started? Thanks to the detailed process statistics and logs, you can even go back and inspect the resource usage on your computer during the last 24 hours.

memory techniques for studying
Achieving photographic memory.?

Good day. I’m a freshman. Is there any site that can help me develop photographic memory? If so, please help me. Or it can also be that you can give me tips and techniques on developing it. I’m starting to be devoted in it. Please help me. Oh. It’s not for study skill or the like. It’s for really enhancing my mind to be a photographic memory.

If you could develop a photographic memory just by practicing a few skills then everybody would be doing it! The reality is that a photographic memory is very very rare, with just 1 in million people capable of achieving such amazing feats, but you can work on improving your memory skills by doing a few simple tricks - tony buzan is a world leader in this subject and has written a number of books on it.

Memory Tapes Seek Magic

Teen Party Ideas For Fun and Fabulous Teen Parties!

Coming up with teen party ideas can be a challenging task, to say the least. The days of throwing together a quick Barney party are long gone. So, roll up your sleeves, gird your loins, and get ready to sit down with your teen and figure out the “magical” theme that will bring a smile as big as the moon. Here are a few ideas to grease the shoot, so to speak.

TEEN PARTY IDEAS - GLOW-IN-THE-DARK

Teens love to have their parties at night, so you might as well take advantage of the dark and host a glow-in-the-dark party. There is instant excitement when you escort your guests into a pitch-black room that is illuminated with phosphorescent party items to greet your guests. Decorate with lots of balloons, curling ribbons, and streamers that will glow under the black lights. Add some tablecloths, party ware, hats, glow sticks, and wall decor, that all have glow-in-the-dark designs. Replace all your light bulbs with black lights. Consider hanging old-fashioned strobe lights and disco balls for a super effect.

TEEN PARTY IDEAS - HOLLYWOOD PARTY

Since your teen is the star of this soiree, you might as well take advantage and roll out the red carpet. You can either visit a carpet liquidator for a red carpet remnant or create a red walkway using plastic red tablecloths. Glue or tape large silver stars along the walkway containing the guests’ names. At the entrance, place a larger gold star containing the birthday teen’s name. Require the guys to wear black suits or tuxedos and the girls to wear long formal wear. As everyone arrives, give them each a pair of black sunglasses, perfect for a group photo op. Also, you might consider giving the guys black top hats and the girls “diamond” tiaras, to create another great group photo op. Fill the walls with movie posters or posters of Hollywood’s great stars and starlets.

TEEN PARTY IDEAS - LASER TAG PARTY

Laser tag facilities usually offer special birthday party options from which you may choose. Laser Tag is a sport loosely associated with tag and hide and seek. It is played in a high-tech environment. Usually you will find theme arenas with special effects like fog, laser beams, mazes, and pulse-pumping music. The great thing about a laser tag party is that it takes everyone away from your home for the main event. The facility will clean-up as part of the package; all you need to do is show up! If you want to extend the party, opt for a pizza lunch or dinner, or you can take all the teens out for Chinese, tacos, or whatever the birthday teen desires.

Although party planning with a teen may be a bit challenging, remember the payoff will all be worth it in the end. When you see that smile on your teen’s face on their special day, it will have all been worth it! Alas, another special memory created.

Memory Walk 2009

February 20th, 2007

memory walk 2009
A walk down memory lane: What were some of those “deals” Obama was working out with auto companies and unions?

And what about those 2 wars he “has to “run”?
Did he think the presidency was nothing more than 4 years of jet setting and golf?

http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/04/29/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry4979228.shtml

“I don’t want to run auto companies, and I don’t want to run banks,” Mr. Obama said. “I’ve got two wars I’ve got to run already–I’ve got more than enough to do.”

The president said DEALS reached with Chrysler’s major debtholders and sacrifices from labor unions improved the automaker’s outlook for survival.

“The details have not yet been finalized, but I’m feeling more optimistic than I was about the possibilities of that getting done,” Mr. Obama said.

I would say one of those deals had to due health care and unions, bet they’re pretty upset lol!

He’s a big goofy grandstanding campaigner out of league.

Memory Leak In Java Code

February 17th, 2007

A Guide To Java Programming

Many older languages, like C and Pascal, were procedural languages. Procedures (also called functions) were blocks of code that were part of a module or application. Procedures passed parameters (primitive data types like integers, characters, strings, and floating point numbers). Code was treated separately to data. You had to pass around data structures, and procedures could easily modify their contents. This was a source of problems, as parts of a program could have unforeseen effects in other parts. Tracking down which procedure was at fault wasted a great deal of time and effort, particularly with large programs.  You are reading the right article if it’s computer programming help that you seek.

In some procedural language, you could even obtain the memory location of a data structure. Armed with this location, you could read and write to the data at a later time, or accidentally overwrite the contents.

Java is an object-oriented language. An object-oriented language deals with objects. Objects contain both data (member variables) and code (methods). Each object belongs to a particular class, which is a blueprint describing the member variables and methods an object offers. In Java, almost every variable is an object of some type or another - even strings. Object-oriented programming requires a different way of thinking, but is a better way to design software than procedural programming.

There are many popular object-oriented languages available today. Some like Smalltalk and Java are designed from the beginning to be object-oriented. Others, like C++, are partially object-oriented, and partially procedural. In C++, you can still overwrite the contents of data structures and objects, causing the application to crash. Thankfully, Java prohibits direct access to memory contents, leading to a more robust system.
Portable

Most programming languages are designed for a specific operating system and processor architecture. When source code (the instructions that make up a program) are compiled, it is converted to machine code which can be executed only on one type of machine. This process produces native code, which is extremely fast.

Another type of language is one that is interpreted. Interpreted code is read by a software application (the interpreter), which performs the specified actions. Interpreted code often doesn’t need to be compiled - it is translated as it is run. For this reason, interpreted code is quite slow, but often portable across different operating systems and processor architectures.

Java takes the best of both techniques. Java code is compiled into a platform-neutral machine code, which is called Java bytecode. A special type of interpreter, known as a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), reads the bytecode, and processes it. Figure One shows a disassembly of a small Java application. The bytecode, indicated by the arrow, is represented in text form here, but when compiled it is represented as bytes to conserve space. Learn more about these techniques with free white papers at IT Knowledge Hub.

Figure One - Bytecode disassembly for “HelloWorld”

The approach Java takes offers some big advantages over other interpreted languages. Firstly, the source code is protected from view and modification - only the bytecode needs to be made available to users. Secondly, security mechanisms can scan bytecode for signs of modification or harmful code, complimenting the other security mechanisms of Java. Most of all though, it means that Java code can be compiled once, and run on any machine and operating system combination that supports a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Java can run on Unix, Windows, Macintosh, and even the Palm Pilot. Java can even run inside a web browser, or a web server. Being portable means that the application only has to be written once - and can then execute on a wider range of machines. This saves a lot of time, and money.
Multi-threaded

If you’ve ever written complex applications in C, or PERL, you’ll probably have come across the concept of multiple processes before. An application can split itself into separate copies, which run concurrently. Each copy replicates code and data, resulting in increased memory consumption. Getting the copies to talk together can be complex, and frustrating. Creating each process involves a call to the operating system, which consumes extra CPU time as well.

A better model is to use multiple threads of execution, referred to as threads for short. Threads can share data and code, making it easier to share data between thread instances. They also use less memory and CPU overhead. Some languages, like C++, have support for threads, but they are complex to use. Java has support for multiple threads of execution built right into the language. Threads require a different way of thinking, but can be understood very quickly. Thread support in Java is very simple to use, and the use of threads in applications and applets is quite commonplace.
Automatic garbage collection

No, we’re not talking about taking out the trash (though a computer that could literally do that would be kind of neat). The term garbage collection refers to the reclamation of unused memory space. When applications create objects, the JVM allocates memory space for their storage. When the object is no longer needed (no reference to the object exists), the memory space can be reclaimed for later use.

Languages like C++ force programmers to allocate and deallocate memory for data and objects manually. This adds extra complexity, but also causes another problem - memory leaks. When programmers forget to deallocate memory, the amount of free memory available is decreased. Programs that frequently create and destroy objects may eventually find that there is no memory left. In Java, the programmer is free from such worries, as the JVM will perform automatic garbage collection of objects.
Secure

Security is a big issue with Java. Since Java applets are downloaded remotely, and executed in a browser, security is of great concern. We wouldn’t want applets reading our personal documents, deleting files, or causing mischief. At the API level, there are strong security restrictions on file and network access for applets, as well as support for digital signatures to verify the integrity of downloaded code. At the bytecode level, checks are made for obvious hacks, such as stack manipulation or invalid bytecode. The strong security mechanisms in Java help to protect against inadvertent or intentional security violations, but it is important to remember that no system is perfect. The weakest link in the chain is the Java Virtual Machine on which it is run - a JVM with known security weaknesses can be prone to attack. It is also worth noting that while there have been a few identified weaknesses in JVMs, they are rare, and usually fixed quickly.
Network and “Internet” aware

Java was designed to be “Internet” aware, and to support network programming. The Java API provides extensive network support, from sockets and IP addresses, to URLs and HTTP. It’s extremely easy to write network applications in Java, and the code is completely portable between platforms. In languages like C/C++, the networking code must be re-written for different operating systems, and is usually more complex. The networking support of Java saves a lot of time, and effort.

Java also includes support for more exotic network programming, such as remote-method invocation (RMI), CORBA and Jini. These distributed systems technologies make Java an attractive choice for large distributed systems.
Simplicity and ease-of-use

Java draws its roots from the C++ language. C++ is widely used, and very popular. Yet it is regarded as a complex language, with features like multiple-inheritance, templates and pointers that are counter-productive. Java, on the other hand, is closer to a “pure” object-oriented language. Access to memory pointers is removed, and object-references are used instead. Support for multiple-inheritance has been removed, which lends itself to clearer and simpler class designs. The I/O and network library is very easy to use, and the Java API provides developers with lots of time-saving code (such as networking and data-structures). After using Java for awhile, most developers are reluctant to return to other languages, because of the simplicity and elegance of Java.

Visco Memory Foam Topper Reviews

February 17th, 2007

The Ultimate in Sleep Comfort

It not only helps you sleep better, it is also good for your bones and muscles. Memory foam matresses are the best things you can get for your bedroom. What used to be an innovation for NASA projects was used as a hospital implement and is now a bedroom-must have. The memory foam is a material that is used in matresses, toppers, and pillows. Such material, used to be known as visco-elastic, conforms to the body’s contours to allow the body to rest in the most natural position. Through the years, manufacturers have made their own improvements and enhancements to the memory foam and has brought the prices of mattresses and cushions made of the material.

Memory foam comes in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Memory foam queen sized mattresses are available in most online and retail stores. The way the memory foam queen sized matresses work starts with a firm polyurethane foam, the additives of which then reacts to heat such as that emitted by the human body to soften and become elastic enough to take the form of the body’s contours. Foam movement is also reduced in the memory foam queen sized mattress allowing a person to shift into another position comfortably without disturbing the person at the other side of the mattress. The result of sleeping in memory foam mattresses is an ultimately comfortable and undisturbed sleep. Such benefits of using memory foam mattresses are priceless.

You can expect to pay upwards of a thousand dollars for a memory foam mattress depending on the type and brand that you choose. There are a lot of options in the internet. Make sure you canvas for the best price and deal first before you make your final decision on which one to buy. Do not choose on the basis of price alone. Take into consideration the pros and cons of a particular product or brand first, and then consider whether it offers the best value for your money or not. Customer reviews abound in third party review sites in the internet. Ask around if you have friends and relatives who are using memory foam queen sized mattresses. There is no harm in trying to find out which ones are good and which ones are bad first.

Memory foam queen sized mattresses are great investments. They not only help give you restful nights of sleep, the health benefits of using memory foam queen sized matresses also allow you to have a better mindset and a stronger well-rested body to tackle every day’s challenges. Do not cheat yourself out of these benefits by going for cheap ordinary mattresses. The wave of the future is here. Memory foam queen sized mattresses are the only choices you have. Say goodbye to restless sleep, tossing and turning while trying to find the right position, and wakeful nights because of aching joints. Enjoying the ultimate in sleep comfort is one decision away with memory foam mattresses. Check out online resources about memory foam mattresses now and see what your options are.

Visual Memory Experiments

February 13th, 2007

visual memory experiments
could anyone please explain this to me?

i am doing some psychology coursework and i have been trying for ages to figure out what this experiment is all about (here’s the link —> http://www.psych.utoronto.ca/users/spence/Spence%20Wong%20Rusan%20Rastegar%202006.pdf or if it doesnt work, try this —> http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:NJzmfLIHTnEJ:www.psych.utoronto.ca/users/spence/Spence%2520Wong%2520Rusan%2520Rastegar%25202006.pdf+How+Color+Enhances+Visual+memory+for+natural+scenes&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=uk )

i was wondering if anyone understands this, and if so please could you give me a rough idea of the experiment, i.e. what the participants had to do.

i would really appreciate some help! thank you!

alright so the actual experiment itself, is:
they have a bunch of pictures in both black and white, and in colour of landscapes.

in the first paragraph there they are saying that they found colour did help people remember things they saw, and it happens becasue of the encoding that goes on within the eye itself.

thats what i believe anyways.. then it just goes on about past tests and how they can be improved
